Behind The Lens

Location

I took a picture in an old, abandoned Soviet hospital. Commonly called "psychiatric" due to the psychiatry department. The hospital was abandoned in 1993, since then it has been decaying.

Time

As far as I remember it was around noon, however the time of the day wasn’t as much important. The weather forecast predicted a cloudy sky so we’ve decided to work with Studio Lighting. Unfortunately, the specific nature of the place (and our laziness, cause we wanted to limit all the mess with lamps) forced us to use daylight as the only source of lighting.

Lighting

The original intention was to show a distinctive image of the model- pretty strong make-up totally not matching the creepy and austere character of the building. To achieve desired result I positioneda sharp lighting directly on the model’s face. The distance between the model and the light was quite short.

Equipment

I used the Canon 70D and the Sigma Art 18-35 f.1.8 lens, plus the Quantuum R + 300 lamp (with a blend) and 2 lamps from the '80s (as a strobo), triggered with a photocell.

Inspiration

It was one of the first shots I made (the weaker one because of experimenting with the lighting at present). I was just trying to feel the energy of the location. Really interesting past of the abandoned ruins give some food for thought. Especially a mystery of a hospital’s basement. It fires up your imagination.

Editing

I improved model’s skin and modified some colors. (I increased saturation to make the location less gloomy).

In my camera bag

In which bag? : D Depending on the session. I usually take pictures of concerts and acts. In both cases, i use different equipment. I always have Sigma Art 18-35 f.1.8 and Canon EF 70-300 f.4-5.6 IS II USM. This is the basis of my work. From time to time, I carry with me Canon 10-18, Jupiter 9 (85mm f.2 / M42) and Yongnuo YN 500EX. If I have to do something in strange locations (or in the studio) 4x Quantuum R + 300 (or 600) with batteries (it weighs a little so I take the lamps when I really have to). I like to work with analog cameras, so I sometimes take Zenith ET, Practica LLC or LOMO Lubitel 166 with me (and a lot of film rolls).

Feedback

If you want to reach the climate of Soviet photography, just set a sharp lighting together with the soft one (do not follow my idea of using the sharp unit only). Sharp studio lighting should be directed straight ahead. Keep in mind that the model will look better if you illuminate her from the feet up to the head. Keep watch on the shadow (it must be sharp as well).
