Behind The Lens

Location

THis portrait was shot during a family photo session at my very humble home studio. The gracious lady turns 100 years old in a few weeks.

Time

a summer Sunday afternoon

Lighting

It was my intention to show the age of my subject. Her facial lines and wrinkles testament to a full life and her eyes staring straight into the lens showing an intensity I have rarely seen in a subject. A single strobe to her left is all that was needed to highlight a face full of lifes footprints.

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D750 coupled with a Nikon 27-70mm F2.8 lens. Lighting from a single studio strobe at camera left, fitted with a 24X48 soft box.

Inspiration

When I met This family I was immediately struck by the aura of their matriarch. Her poise and manner were very compelling and her age had certainly not diminished her capacity to draw you into her. I knew instantly how I wanted to photograph this regal and alluring woman. I wanted to capture not only her age and experience but also her spirit.

Editing

THere had been very little post processing. None was needed.

In my camera bag

My camera bag keep getting bigger and bigger. depending upon what I am shooting it gets packed and unpacked a lot. However the essentials are My Nikon D750 along with my Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, Nikon 70-200mm f2.8, Samyang 14mm f2.8, a couple of Yongnuo 695 speed lights and triggers, then perhaps a circular polarising filter and a variable ND filter. Never far away is a travel tripod, just in case.

Feedback

It's hard to give specifics when you are shooting an emotive portrait. How can you be specific when you are attempting to capturing a feeling or a mood ? In the case of this image. All I can offer is to trust your initial instincts. If you can feel the image, then chances are those who later view the image will feel it too.
