These two rocks unified with a heavy rope are called Meoto Iwa (married couple rocks). They represent married Japanese Kami (spirit of God,or God himself) Izanagi and Izanami who created Japan according to Shinto mythology. The Izanagi kami also brought froth the Sun God. With all of these mythological connection, the sighting of rising sun with these two rocks is considered as a spiritual act in Japan.
