Behind The Lens

Location

I lived up in Muskoka for 15 yrs after retiring and was about to have an abundance of wildlife walking through my property. At that point I knew photography was my key to enjoying my retirement days up in the bush taking photos of animal, you don't get to see up close in the city.

Time

It was one of those great capture of a successful day watching my subject going about a day in a life activity which allowed me to take a few good moments to enjoy. Afternoon would be a suitable time for this to happen.

Lighting

Keeping a good eye focused on a good pic, I realized that as a cloud rolled over and softened all the reflections around my subject, everything was much clearer and cleaner and it made my target stop in its tracks, loosing the light, it had to rely on its hearing, most like the quietness of a eclipse of the sun, great that the shutter was on silent for a change...

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon Powershot S5 IS at an 1/80sec f7.1 72mm at an ISO 200, it was my go to camera in my early learning days. Retirement gave me my bare necessities to learn to enjoy taking photos, as my mentor once told me, never but never take lessons in photography, you do have an eye for taking good pictures so don't get lead down the wrong path, so I enjoyed it more.

Inspiration

I always had my eye out for wildlife walking through the property and was fascinated by these small creatures that my cats use to terrorize but never harmed them and the sound they used to communicate to one another was strange at first but curious for me. It was a challenge to capture a photo of one but they were always so fast, speeding around.

Editing

Nothing drastic about its development, with just some medium contrast to bring out the grass or background and a little sharpening to smooth out its fur. I maintain a non professional approach and keep it as a hobby, which I find more fun.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is light these days, with my Canon EOS Rebel T6 and my only extra lens is a Canon Zoom EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 and keep it in my backpack and take it with me on my motorcycle, to get some shots that I see as I ride out to the country, now that I reside in the city these days. I do enjoy the country life more then the cityscape, or an escape.

Feedback

I do try to capture any subject in their comfortable surroundings but I do like to finish off a photo session by making a little clicking sound with my mouth to have them turn to look at you for that one special eye to eye contact. They give many inquisitive looks at you, making a photo more then special but that connection between you and them.
