Behind The Lens

Location

Every year some friends and family and my dad and I rent a beach house in Groton Long Point, Connecticut. This is the view if you step out onto the back porch and turn to the right. It is a beautiful little beach side town in the southern coast of Connecticut. It is home to many historical things, including Mystic Seaport, which houses historical sailing ships and boats, and an entire recreation of a 19th century seafaring village; it is the largest maritime museum in the US. It is also home to Mystic Pizza, yes, the place where the movie was made and what it was made about. There is also the Mystic Aquarium, one of my favorite places in the state. There is Olde Mistick Village; a small group of shops in buildings designed to represent a New England Village of about 1720.

Time

This was late afternoon, just before the sunset. It was sunny, but there were clouds streaking the sky as well. It was a hot, but beautiful day at the shore in late summer and early fall; how could it not be when you're sitting on the beach? It was The first week of September; still absolutely gorgeous at the beach. All the kids were heading back to school; which was a shame seeing how beautiful it was. My dad and I were stepping out onto the back porch so we could put our shoes on to go for a walk, when I saw this beautiful view to my right. I had to stop and take pictures before our walk; I didn't realize at the time how nicely it came out.

Lighting

It was a sunny day on the beach; no fake lighting needed. I was standing directly in the sunset with my camera pointed at the sun as you can see.

Equipment

At that point i didn't have that much equipment; all I used was my camera, a Canon PowerShot SX60 HS.

Inspiration

The sky was absolutely stunning as I stepped out of the house and onto the porch to get ready to go down to the beach. I ran back in the house and grabbed my camera; I wasn't missing this. I love taking pictures of this spot on the beach, where you can see where the beach has a curve and turns into the breakwater boulders. The houses down there are stunning; millions each. I always take pictures of this curve in the beach, it's such a beautiful spot, especially when the sun going down; as when the sun is going down, it sets right in that spot, perfect for pictures. That curve of the beach is so perfect; you get some water, some sand, the houses, and the sun all in the same spot!

Editing

I usually do a lot of editing, but this time it was so beautiful that any editing would have ruined it. So what I did was upload it on here, and edit it solely by using their 'Landscape' filter; and that looked so great that I chose to not use any others.

In my camera bag

I don't have that much equipment as a broke 22 year old; I make do with what I have. I keep my camera with me wherever I go. I keep an extra memory card in my bag all the time as well as an extra battery, a wall charger, and a car charger.

Feedback

Always try, in this kind of picture, to get a little bit of the sand, a little bit of the water, and to make sure to get at least part of the sun in the shot. I like to get shots like this when the sun is at it's highest, or about to set. Get a shot where you have an interesting subject mater, you don't just want a plain old beach picture. Make sure to take your time, the beach isn't going anywhere; you have a lot of time to get the shot that you want.
