Location
I took this photo at the Aguila De Osa resort in Costa Rica. This beautiful resort sits on the edge of the Osa Peninsula. As you can tell, this location makes for some pretty spectacular views.Time
I remember sitting in a leather-backed rocking chair on my deck at around 5:45pm and seeing the sun slowly set. The intense color grew as the evening went on. As with any sunset, I only had a matter of seconds to capture it at its prime. The sounds of the jungle echoed behind me, and the reflection on the ocean made this photo one that I will never forget capturing. A photo is truly worth a thousand words in this case.Lighting
The lighting was rough to work with because white balance and sunsets are always tricky to figure out. The true colors of the clouds didn’t show until it was pretty dark outside, so I battled having a dark foreground with the blazing sunset. Overall, I think these challenges that we overcome as photographers makes our hobby/job more interesting and fun.Equipment
I used my Nikon D3200 with my AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR lens. This is the only equipment that I used.Inspiration
The beauty of Costa Rica is what inspired me to take this photo. Not only does this picture show the beauty of the country’s natural world, it also shows the intensity of Costa Rica in a metaphorical sense. The people of this country work day in and day out to provide for their families, but their hardwork is rewarded with sights like this sunset. I felt so fortunate to be able to see something of such beauty that can break all barriers that set us apart. Language, religion, or race, we are able to agree that seeing sights like these can connect us through pure joy.Editing
I did a bit of post-processing with this photo. I edited the foreground to make it a bit lighter, since the sunset took away from the wonderful plants. The sky itself didn’t need much editing, as it was so intense, so I just played with the contrast and luminosity to find something that I really liked. In my camera bag
I usually have my Nikon D3200 with my 18-300mm, 18-55mm, 55-200mm, and 40mm Micro lens. These lenses allow me to shoot in almost any conditions at any time. I do prefer the 18-300mm when traveling because it is so versatile. I can take landscape shots as well as wildlife shots without having to change lenses. This is especially good in environments with high humidity, as I don’t want to get condensation inside the camera or the lens. I also use polarizer filters for all of my lenses because they definitely help with reducing glare on water and bringing out certain colors. My tripod of choice right now is an amazon basics tripod. It’s not the highest quality, but it gets the job done. I’m slowly upgrading my equipment because photography is becoming a bigger part of my life.Feedback
Sunsets are always tricky to capture. You have to be at the right place at the right time. If you are lucky enough to witness a spectacular sky, then make sure to have your camera ready because before you know it, it will be gone. I like to think of sunsets as a short and sweet message. They are easy to remember and hard to forget. Also, never forget to look behind you during a sunset because the sky can be even more glorious in different directions. Overall, be patient, have fun, and you will get amazing shots and have an amazing time capturing them.
