Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Pebble Beach, California. I was visiting and driving along 17 mile drive and stopped wherever I saw great scenery and parking.

Time

We arrived at the gate of 17 mile drive just little before sunset, we were afraid we'd miss the sunset as we stay at Calistoga the night before, it was more than 4 hours drive. We arrived Pebble beach area and the sun was just about to set, we were very lucky as traffic was heavy at times.

Lighting

The light was simply amazing, the sun was setting, with interesting high clouds forming different patterns and catching on the sun's glow, and the reflections off the ocean, can't ask for more.

Equipment

This was shot on my Nikon D90 w/ 18-105mm @18mm f/9

Inspiration

Just the beautiful scenery. We arrived at this spot where we could get a clean shot with the nice rocks at the foreground with incoming waves hitting the rocks and being redirected, forming some nice patterns, and the tree at the right providing some framing too.

Editing

I didn't do much with this image, probably a little bit of contrast but that's about it.

In my camera bag

I had my Nikon D90 w/ 18-105 f3.5-5.6, and usually have my 50mm f1.8. I always have my hoya circular polarizer too, I love using it, though I didn't use it with this shot as using cpl shooting into the sun is pointless and eating up light.

Feedback

First of all, be there. Nothing beats facing an amazing view. Then once you're there, don't rush to snap pictures. Walk around, have a feel, take it all in and let the scenery amazes you. Then try to find good compositions; rules of thirds, leading lines, framing, foreground, etc... all helps, but ultimately its what feels right and amazes you, if the image can't amaze you then it'll probably have a hard time amazes others. So enjoy and happy shooting!!
