My friend tossing up a toy moon we'd been messing around with that night. At this point we'd given up on shooting the shots we went for (it was too cloudy) and I was goofing off with a remote for the first time. The result was this accidental shot which was easily the best shot of the night.

Behind The Lens

Location

Pidgeon Point Lighthouse off Highway 1, south of Pescadero in northern California. This shot was taking on a short trail just outside of the hostel at the lighthouse (the hostel buildings are the buildings in the background of the photo).

Time

It was just after the sun had set. We‘d been shooting on the north side of the lighthouse until the sun hit the horizon. Once, the sun was down we made our way to the south side of the lighthouse (where this photo was taken).

Lighting

We had a small fake moon lamp and were unsure of how to incorporate it into any shot. We tried shooting with longer exposures so we could paint a light painting (but honestly, need to practice). After many failed paintings, we just wound up tossing the moon back and forth and the shot above was the result of my friend’s beautiful moon toss.

Equipment

My Sony A6300 (with the kit 16-50mm lens) was mounted on a tripod and I was using a remote trigger to be sure there wouldn’t be any camera shake.

Inspiration

No photo in particular. But the general uptick in long exposure photos with amazing light paintings (on Instagram and the like) have generally inspired me to play around with light and long exposures more.

Editing

Yep, in Lightroom. The background sky was lightened, tinted, and the contrast was increased. The yellow hues had vibrancy bumped up. And a vingette effect was added.

In my camera bag

Besides whatever camera I take out, always a tripod, a remote, 10 stop ND filter, two lenses (one that zooms e.g. 24-70mm or 16-50mm and a fixie e.g. 50mm f/1.8), either my iPad or external harddrive for on the go backups/editing. Extra batteries and snacks/water if I think I’ll be shooting all day.

Feedback

Just have fun with it. Every time we tried to paint something exactly or tried for a specific shot, it didn’t work as expected. This photo is a random, near the end of the day, “everyone is tired and cold” shot. Sometimes it’s the shots that you take without expectations that end up being the best ones.
