Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken near my home in a park we frequent. There is a variety of playground equipment and as a puppy I was teaching him to sit nicely. I wanted to also capture his puppy moments in an area he enjoys. I was thrilled to notice his smile caught his usual curiousity and his baby teeth were perfectly situated to grab a quick but puppy loving shot.

Time

I remember going for a mid day walk during the early days of spring where it was just beginning to become warm but not too hot. This photo was taken at approximately 2:00 pm EST.

Lighting

I wanted the lighting to highlight the many colors of his fur which can often be hard to accurately capture. I was really pleased to see that the shadow fell in a way that gave him a slight outer side glow and showed his various shades effectively.

Equipment

I used only a Samsung Galaxy 6 phone.

Inspiration

He was sitting on one of the tiered seats and I saw a soft puppy smile with his baby teeth peeking out. It was the first time I had seen them posed that way and wanted to capture the moment.

Editing

There are two things I usually find I need to do with his photos. One is to clean the dark wet areas around the eyes. I used a combination of lightroom to remove darkness and snapseed to bring back the color balance. The other was leash removal and I used photoshop for that.

In my camera bag

I don't have any great cameras yet. I usually have a nikon coolpix 610 and my samsung galaxy 6 cell phone. If I am going somewhere for a more formal set of photos of my pup then I bring a 5 in one light refracter set.

Feedback

Best advice I can give is to know your landscape and lighting at various times of day and know your subject. Knowing the mannerisms or personality of your subject will help give you the opportunity to catch a unique shot. And treats. Lots of treats in pocket.
