Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the city of Cagliari, the capital of the beautiful island of Sardinia (Italy). I was in an old street in the upper part of the city. My original intention was to photograph an airplane (which you can still see in the distance in the picture), but the reflections of the sun on the water were so strong! So, I decided to aim the lens straight on the sun, helped by the clouds that attenuated the light.

Time

I remember taking it at 8:30 pm, in May of a warm Italian spring!

Lighting

Taking this kind of picture is not always easy, for at least two reasons. The first is that the light of the sun is too strong for the camera lens. It's therefore advisable to take them when the clouds filter the light, giving consistency to the solar sphere. The second problem is related to the excessive reflections of light on the water. It is advisable, if the light is too strong and you have difficulty, wait until the sun is lower on the horizon

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3300 with an ordinary lens AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G, without a tripod.

Inspiration

As I said, my original intention was to photograph an airplane with a lens 70-300mm, but I was impressed by the reflections of the sun on the water. So, I decided to mount a 18-55mm to aim the lens straight on the sun, helped by the clouds that attenuated the light. The day was windy and the clouds vanished quickly, so I found the right moment.

Editing

I only slightly increased the brightness of the lower part of the photo (the buildings), so that they can be glimpsed. The photo was not overly post processed

In my camera bag

Usually I love taking pictures surrounded by nature, so I need a spacious bag, which allows me to contain also water, food and other necessary accessories, like a tripod. I shoot with a Nikon D3300. I always carry a 70-300 lens, which is essential for taking pictures of animals without getting close and frightening them.

Feedback

Sardinia has a very hot climate. Summer is usually characterized by the absence of clouds. To take this type of photo it's better to choose a more suitable period of the year, between September and April. It will be easier to find weather conditions similar to those in the photo.
