Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Key West, Florida in October 2013. The early beginnings of my DSLR Photography.

Time

I took this shot in the evening, at sunset obviously. I exactly remember that night. Some friends and I rented a car in Miami, Florida and drove into the south, across the islands. That was such a cool trip. We stopped at beaches, at bars, wherever we wanted to have a break. We had a great day. In the evening we arrived in Key West and enjoyed the beautiful atmosphere and the sunset. This sunset is insane. It's definitely worth a visit.

Lighting

The play of colors just before (or during) the sunset is simply the best time during the day to get beautiful pictures - besides the morning hours, which are also incredible for taking photos. If you respect some basics, you actually have only to wait for the perfect view, timing or motive. Being patient while being always ready is the key, in my opinion. I think people call this outdoor photography lighting "golden hour".

Equipment

This photo was shot on my first DSLR, a Nikon D3100 with the KIT lens (Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6) at 30mm f/4,2. I didn't use anything else for this shot.

Inspiration

That time when I was down there was one of the, if not the greatest time of my life. I have been on a language school trip in Miami, Florida for three months. The balance between improving my english skills and hanging around at the beach, at ocean drive, in the world's most famous clubs or somewhere else in Florida, was incredible. I can totally recommend such a trip to everybody - especially to people who want to capture special moments, people, landscapes and casual impressions of an exceptional time of their life. One of these special moments, which I fortunately could capture, was a bird, that was flying straight towards me, during sunset in Key West, Florida, down by the water. That was such a moment. I couldn't plan exactly this picture. It just happened. So, the inspiration is actually: Live with open eyes, change your actual point of view into another perspective and enjoy - and sometimes move your index finger.

Editing

Yes, I love post-processing. It's just insane, how flexible you are nowadays when it comes to improving (that's how I would describe it) your photography. Just tiny movements of the sliders can lead to a complete different picture with different emotions or a different character. It's impressive. I'm using Adobe lightroom and for retouching/manipulating I use Affinity Photo, lately. In this case I just improved the colors, increased the contrast and lowered the lights. That's all actually.

In my camera bag

I just switched from DSLR to DSLM. I got a SONY a7ii with the FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6/lens. My next investment will probably be the FE 70-200mm F4 G.

Feedback

As I already mentioned above. Seeing the things from another point of view is one of many keys. Looking around, underneath or above you attentively gives you other perspectives of your individual picture. Sometimes being patient and waiting for the perfect timing will get you the perfect shot but some other time it's the planing, which leads to success. It also depends on what type of photography it is about. Considering that photo I took in Key West, the most important advice to all photographers out there is to go out and explore the world. Find the things you are enjoying most and make a photo album of your own life out of it.
