Location
This was shot in a local park in Saanich, British ColumbiaTime
This was about 8:00 am so that I could take advantage of the low-angle sun to light up the side of the tree with the nest hole.Lighting
Early mornings on sunny days are worth getting up for!Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 7D MkII with Tamron 150-600mm and a Manfrotto monopodInspiration
I had heard a couple weeks previous that there was an owl nest somewhere in this park. The first time I walked down the trails in search of the nest, I could hear a number of ravens squawking incessantly, which is usually a sign that there's a predator or some other danger in the vicinity. When I tracked down their location, they were circling around this broken tree, and close inspection revealed it was the location of the great horned owl nest.Editing

Without a doubt, a vibration stabilized zoom lens is required. All the owl action is invariably 50 feet above the forest floor and usually at least 100 feet away. Ensuring that nesting sites remain undisturbed is paramount. If their behaviours are modified by your presence, it's time to leave.
