Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at La Porte, Texas at The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic site. I waited until 6pm when the sun was setting so that I could capture a reflection of the memorial on the water. It was taken on March 6, 2018 one hundred and eighty-two years after the fall of the Alamo.

Time

I spent the day visiting the San Jacinto memorial and saw the water in front of the memorial and thought it would be a great shot to take at sunset. I came back and set my camera and took the picture around 6pm

Lighting

It was a calm day and the water was practically still. It gave the scene a solemn feeling to a place where a great battle had taken place that came to define the beginning of the state of Texas. The setting sun gave the scene the ceremonial feeling I wanted to impart.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D500 with a Nikon 18-140mm zoom set on a Bogen 3036 tripod. ISO was 100 shot at F16 and 1/6 sec.

Inspiration

The Battleground Memorial site has a great meaning for Texans. I had always wanted to visit the site and this was my first and only visit to the site. I wanted to make sure I recorded the site accordingly given the importance it plays in the history of the state.

Editing

I use photoshop to enhance the color of the sky and deepen the color of the water. Also, I used ON1 to crop and add the dynamic contrast to the image.

In my camera bag

In my bag , I carry a 70-300mm nikon zoom in addition to my work horse 18-140 nikon zoom and a Nikon 40mm standard lens with close-up capabilities. I also have an assortment of filters in the event I may need them. My Bogen 3036 work horse tripod is always close by.

Feedback

Patience is very important in photography. There are times when we have to come back to a scene hours later and wait for the lighting to fall into place. As we visit a site, it is so important to look behind us and all around actually and view a scene from different angles and locations to find that one angle that will give you the shot that you are looking for.
