Behind The Lens

Location

This is Mike. Mike owns a small bar in downtown Kuala Lumper Malaysia.

Time

My friends and I would go there after work and drink his ice cold beer and chat with him. This photograph was taken at around 5pm one afternoon after work

Lighting

The bar was dark and moody with photographs of his guests plastered all over the walls. There was only 1 spot in the bar bright enough to take this picture. Right now the entrance. Aside from that, you wouldn't know what time of day it was once you were inside.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 5D Mark 4 and my gitzo tripod. I used the available light in the bar

Inspiration

Mike had such an interesting life, bar and attitude to everything. His face told so many of his stories. I wanted to capture his true essence.

Editing

I like to capture everything possible in camera rather than doing much post production. For this shot I treated it like this. I shot his face up very close and added a slight vignette when processing the raw files.

In my camera bag

I always have my canon 5D Mark 4 with me. My favourites lens is my 85mm for portraits. I also have a 40mm which is also great for portraits and street photography. I shot this with my 85mm

Feedback

Get to know your subject before pulling your camera out (if possible) Find out about their life, who they are, what they love, why they are there. Understanding these things before photographing anyone not only relaxes them, but help you to understand what makes them who they are and gives you more information to capture their true essence.
