Location
This image was taken at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado! This couple met at this location and chose to have their engagement photos taken there!Time
Getting the right exposure and avoiding harsh light and shadows was a challenge for this shoot as it features towering, and infamous, red rocks made of sandstone. We found an intimate outcropping to take photos in early evning, allowing us a nice cool location with ample lighting without the harshness!Lighting
The clients loved a more simplistic yet moody look. We were able to achieve their wish by finding a correctly shaded outcropping in early evening, allowing me the flexibility to create a moody look in the final product.Equipment
This was shot with a Sony A6500 on a 50mm at an aperture of 1/8 with an ISO of 100.Inspiration
This couple were very much in love but were not those that would show their affection outwardly. They wanted an intimate shot to show their commitment to one another without being overly affectionate, they loved the idea of them embracing and her engagement ring showing but not their faces.Editing
Typically in portraits, I try to keep the images in color but as they requested a simple and clean approach on this one, I opted to change it to black and white, I removed any grain and utilized a gradient filter to achieve the moody look without losing focus on their hands. In my camera bag
I always have my Sony A6500, 35mm, 50mm and my Macro 90mm. I utilize a Cotton Carrier system to make ease of access simple and quick! Depending on the shoot, I have two tripods but typically use my MeFOTO Backpacker Travel Tripod. Although its typically attached to my bag not in it, I absolutely LOVE my Lastolite Fabric Diffuser, it makes the harshest light soft like butter making any location a good location. As always, I keep a full cleaning kit and several smaller diffusers just in case!Feedback
The shot itself was not difficult to achieve, do not be afraid to play with different angles as well. Fortunately this couple was similar in height and made the shot comfortable. I found shooting straight on and slightly above achieved a more flattering look then any other angle we tried. The biggest attribute to achieving this was making the couple comfortable and to feel as if I was not there.
