Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Sutter Studios in SF,

Time

I took this photo in the studio during the spring.

Lighting

I chose dramatic lighting utilizing 3 Broncolor strobes with 2 grids and gel packs.

Equipment

Canon 5dsR. 50mm lens. Broncolor Strobes, reflector heads with 5,10 grids.

Inspiration

I was inspired to photograph this image through appreciation of the natural body form and focusing on the textural detail of my subject and the beautiful accentuation of the powder on skin.

Editing

This image is not photoshopped, simple adjustments in Lightroom to bring out the contrast and detail of the texture in the skin and powder.

In my camera bag

Canon 5dsR, Canon 1ds mkII, Phase One XF, SK 85mm, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L, Canon 85mm f/1.2 L, Rokinon 85mm f/1.4, Rokinon 35mm f/1.4, Canon 28-70mm f/2.8L, Manfrotto Tripod, Hoodman loupe.

Feedback

Only advice I can give is have a solid foundation of camera operation and basic lighting techniques, then break the rules. Experiment with different exposures and know the limits of your equipment. Know how to freeze motion and play with it till you reach your desired aesthetic. Have fun with your images, it’s not always about the product but the process is where the real journey and discovery begins
