Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at the Prineville Fly-In at the Prineville, OR. municipal airport.

Time

Taken at 8:26 AM on July 26, 2014.

Lighting

The sun was coming from over my left shoulder and was just at the edge of the morning "good light". The sky was clear blue with no clouds. In order to make this photograph happen, I needed to do a composite.

Equipment

Nikon D610, Nikon 24-85mm @ 36mm. Hand held laying flat on my back under the nose of this beautifully restored aircraft with the VR on.

Inspiration

My aircraft shooting hero is Moose Peterson and he is always looking for the shot from a different angle. I knew this shot could be good, but I needed to look for the proper composition to create the right dynamics in the shot.

Editing

Doing my usual post processing in LR, the shot came up a little bit empty when I "finished" it. I started searching my catalog for a proper sky photo and I found one that I had taken from my backyard in Prineville earlier that same year. The added sky worked wonderfully with the war plane.

In my camera bag

Lenses, filters, extra batteries, and things to help me with my pursuit, from super wide to large telephoto.

Feedback

One should always think about the artistic challenges faced with each shot, and don't limit your own artistic talents.
