Behind The Lens

Location

This is a self-portrait that I took in my old apartment a few years ago. I shot next to a window in my living room. The setup was very simple. When I'm inspired, I just work with what I have. I happened to have a few flowers next to me during this photoshoot, so I decided to include them in my portraits.

Time

This was taken on a cloudy day in the afternoon. The light was just perfect for a soft portrait photoshoot.

Lighting

Shadows are very important in portrait photography. I love using side light (light that just hits one side of my face) because it adds depth to my work and also shapes my face dramatically.

Equipment

- Canon 5D Mark II - 50mm f/1.8 lens

Inspiration

I was inspired by a few book cover photos. Photos taken for book covers tend to have a lot of negative space. They're often soft and blurred. The model's face isn't always very clear. I've always been a fan of this concept and decided to create something that reflected my admiration for it.

Editing

I colour corrected this photo in Lightroom using a few custom presets.

In my camera bag

I have my beloved Canon 5D Mark II, a Yongnuo 35mm f/2 lens, and a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens!

Feedback

Spend quality time with yourself to develop your own style. Don't compare yourself to other photographers too much. I believe that every photographer has something original to say through their work. There's room for everyone in this photography world, so we all deserve to share our stories in a way that feels authentic to us.
