Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken a few years back at my local park. Cedar Creek in Belle Vernon, PA, USA. It was a stormy day, but the lighting and mood just felt perfect.

Time

Well, this was a few years back, but I think this was probably early to mid-afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting is all natural. The Sun was hidden by a thick layer of clouds. This was a long exposure through a neutral density filter.

Equipment

I shot this with my Canon 60D, a Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens, with a B+W 10-Stop Neutral Density filter. I use a 3-Legged Thing "Albert" tripod, who got his feet wet in the river (don't worry, he's built for it).

Inspiration

I was inspired by the way the sky looked that day, reflected off the smooth river. The treeline has a way of drawing your eyes "into" the photo.

Editing

Not going to lie, a little post processing was done. I use Photoshop CC (though it may have been CS6 back then). There were a couple of images stacked for an HDR composite.

In my camera bag

These days, I carry a Canon 5D Mark IV, and several lenses, as well as my 3-Legged Thing tripod. I usually have my filters in a case too, several extra batteries and memory cards just in case.

Feedback

Well, the best advice I can give on capturing something similar, is to not be afraid to go out in bad weather. It rained all day this day, it was well worth getting a little damp to capture some moody pictures!
