Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale, Arizona. They have an amazing collection of 1000's of butterflies. Photographers get a special hour all to themselves once a month to walk around and take pictures before the general public is allowed in.

Time

This was taken about 8am in March. It was in an indoor butterfly building and the humidity is always a problem.

Lighting

The lighting is tough in the enclosure. One minute it is overexposed and the next it is almost black. It is important to pay attention to the light. Three steps to your left or right can make all the difference in the world.

Equipment

I used a Cannon 77D with a 100mm macro lens I rented from my local camera shop. I wasn't sure I would enjoy the macro aspect but I fell in love with it and can't wait to get my own macro lens!

Inspiration

I loved the contrast between the white butterfly and the purple flowers. The butterfly looks so elegant and the flowers are such a vibrant purple that it was easy to see that it would be a beautiful combination.

Editing

I am new to Photoshop so back in March I didn't know all that it was capable of. I made sure the exposure was correct and adjusted the sharpness a bit, but not much more than that.

In my camera bag

You never know what you might need so I tend to carry a lot! (If I know I will be walking miles I will definitely try and pack lighter.) I have a Cannon 77D body. I carry a 50mm, 85mm and a 70-200mm lens. (All Cannon) I recently got a 24-70mm that I love (Tamron). I have a flash, but i don't carry it much for the simple fact I still don't feel comfortable using it. I have filters to try and work with whatever the light gives me. I also always carry a backup battery and extra memory cards.

Feedback

When photographing butterflies I think your goal is to take a lot of pictures. Don't feel bad if most of them are blurry. Those butterflies move fast! But if you take 500 pictures and 20 are fabulous then I think you have had a great day!
