The Egyptian Gate - First opened in 1912 in Marsden Park, Nelson, Pendle, Lancashire, UK.
The Egyptian Gate was once the entrance to the upper gardens and was mostly known as 'The Wishing Gate' after the local custom of picking a leaf from a tree and placing it into one of the carved holes before walking through the gate and making a wish.
The gate has several unusual carvings around it including that of The Secretary Bird at the top of the arch. The bird of prey is only found in Africa and is a symbol, of success and strength. The Egyptian Gate plays a major role in the history of Marsden Park.
