Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Uclulet, B.C. Canada, a small coastal town on the Western side of Vancouver Island. The warehouse building is deep in the woods along an unmarked trail that leads to a crashed U.S. bomber from the post-war era. Keeping myself and my gear out of the mud was my primary concern. This building was a nice reprieve from the rain for my girlfriend (in the photo) and I.

Time

Like most days in April, the weather in this part of the coastal rain forest was wet and miserable. However, that did provide an nice even light at midday when this photo was taken.

Lighting

Because of the overcast weather, the lighting in this shot was completely natural and even.

Equipment

This was shot with a NIkon 200D placed directly on the ground. Lens: Nikor 17-55.

Inspiration

I was specifically looking for opportunities to place people in my photos as a an opportunity to practice taking stock images that didn't require model releases. As well, I wanted to practice creating compositions that contained people without it being evident that the camera is present. I feel that doing this enables photos to tell a better story.

Editing

No post work on this photo.

In my camera bag

I always have my iPhone, my aging 200D and my 17-55 lens. That's it. If I'm feeling particularly adventurous, I'll bring along my Manfroto monopod.

Feedback

Tell a story. If you don't have a story, use the photo to speak the emotions that the setting provides for you.
