Location
This photo was taken in the north of England at a wildlife centre called Turbary Woods. The bird was so calm and collected and j knew that I couldn’t pass off the opportunity to take the photo.Time
My scops owl photo is probably my best image and made me realise my love for wildlife and animal photography. I took it at around 1PM which was perfect light in my opinion.Lighting
As the light was all natural and the bird was only out for a few minutes, I couldn’t really tell you anything about lighting other than how the light was shaded on the right and the sun was bright on the left, which gave a nicely lit background.Equipment
This photo was handheld as tripods were not allowed in the flying area. I used my Canon 60D (yes, a very old camera) and a Canon 55-250mm lens which I was borrowing from a photographer friend. The image stabilisation and the stillness of the bird really complimented each other and made the photo, in my opinion, a lot better.Inspiration
I was going to Turbary Woods primarily for this photo shoot as I was had never really shot many animals. This shot is definitely my favourite and the background really made the photo so I had to take it.Editing
Who doesn’t edit their photos nowadays? I can’t really name any people who don’t. I only did a small bit of editing, increasing the exposure, contrast etc. I edited it in Adobe Lightroom.In my camera bag
I always have the majority of my kit in my bag. Canon 60D, Canon 70-300mm, Canon 10-18mm, Canon 50mm Prime (I’m a Canon fanboy), Sigma 18-50mm, 2 intravalometers, a cleaning kit and steel wool (just in case there’s a perfect shot). My 70-300mm is probably my favourite lens as its colours are amazing!Feedback
Just go out and shoot! Even if you aren’t planning on taking the photo, take it! It’s better to have taken the photo and not use it than to want it and not have it!
