Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. I went out for a short camping and wanted to experiment with night photography since I didn't have much experience with it.

Time

I woke up around midnight and decided to check out the sky. Just a few yards from my tent I found a nice break in the trees.

Lighting

Since I didn't have much experience with night photography I did a lot of playing around with lighting. I used my headlamp to 'paint' the trees around the frame. I tried a bunch of different angles and varying the amount of light from my headlamp and finally got this photo.

Equipment

My camera was a Canon Rebel SL1 and I used my headlamp for lighting. Unfortunately I had forgot my tripod so I had to balance the camera on my backpack.

Inspiration

I love astro-photography and photos of the night sky so I went out with the intent to experiment and learn a bit more about it. I just happened to get a great shot out of it!

Editing

i just used Digital Photo Professional in order to brighten up the colors a bit.

In my camera bag

I always have my SL1 camera body and two lenses in my bag. Other than that I make sure to keep an extra battery for those cold nights that suck all the juice out.

Feedback

YouTube! It's how I learned to take this shot and there's so many great videos out there to teach yourself. I watched a few videos which gave me an idea of the right settings to start with and then I played around with them from there. Also, don't forget your tripod and warm clothes! It makes it so much easier.
