Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at from my back deck, looking at the nearby bird feeder. The bird is coming to land on the feeder, approximately 15 feet away from me.

Time

This shot was taken in the mid afternoon of a sunny day.

Lighting

The bright afternoon sun meant I could use a high shutter speed to freeze the bird in flight, even though it was flapping its wings quite quickly.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon T6i, with a 55-200mm lens at f5.6.

Inspiration

I enjoy shooting wild life, especially birds. The busy bird feeder offered an easy opportunity to try to capture some birds in flight.

Editing

The only post-processing was a crop on the bird to eliminate the feeder.

In my camera bag

I’m a rank amateur - most days I’m lucky to have a spare battery that is charged in my bag. My “kit” currently includes the stock lens that came with my T6i, and the 55-200mm f5.6 lens I took this picture with.

Feedback

Just head out and take pictures - the birds are always around. I have found different birds come out for different activities at various times of day - flying, feeding, playing - they all have different habits. If you take a walk around the same time each day, you can begin to expect their behaviours.
