Location
This intimate portrait was shot in my studio in Virginia Beach, Va. It's a great space with high ceilings that allow me flexibility with lighting.Time
One of the advantages of having a no-window studio space is that day can become night and night turns into day depending on what I want to create. This low key, restricted light photo was created mid-day in winter.Lighting
5 lights were used in this shot. Very low powered key and fill lights provide detail close to camera and soften shadows that would have otherwise fallen sharply from the backlights. Large stripboxed studio strobes either side of the subject face back toward camera to provide a nice highlighted edge against the black muslin backdrop. A snooted speedlight above provides detail on her hair and hand.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D750 and Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8.Inspiration
This is one of my favorite styles of shooting. Creating form and shape with light, using shadows to conceal, and telling a story by providing a trail of light to follow are what I'm looking to achieve. Celebrating the beauty of the human form is inspiration itself.Editing
For me, these images require very little post-processing. I shoot them far left to minimize noise and bring up the exposure in post. Many times I'll convert these to black and white, but for this image, my model's skin tones were so lovely, I prefer the natural color. In my camera bag
Different tools for different jobs. I already mentioned my portraiture combo above. For sports and wildlife, it's a D7100 and 150-600mm, for video it's a Panasonic GH5, and drones I still like the DJI X5 with 15mm prime. Besides cameras, I carry speedlights with remote triggers, hot lights like Lume Cubes, and sometimes large panel LEDs for lighting large spaces.Feedback
You can take images like this just about anywhere. All you really need is 4 stops of exposure difference (and a little space) between the background and your subject. Start without your subject, and adjust your aperture and shutter so you get an almost black exposure, then bring in your subject and adjust your lighting on them, making sure to use spot metering if you're not using full manual settings.
