These graceful birds were once slaughtered in their thousands for their feathers. Apparently they adorned the hats of Victorian and early 20th Century women. All for nothing but vanity. They are now protected and their numbers continue to rise. Still not as numerous as their cousins, the Little Egret, but it is so good to see at least 2 or 3 on the marshes at a time now. I just think they are so elegant and beautiful.
