No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to "The Rock" the legendry island prison of Alcatraz. Located 1.5 miles offshore, the prison was in use from 1868 as a military prison, before becoming a federal prison in 1933 until 1963. Famous inmates include Al Capone, the famous "Birdman" Robert Stroud, and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. It is claimed that no one ever escaped alive, though many tried, including Clint Eastwood!!
