Location
This shot was done in the Atlanta zoo.Time
It was almost 5:00pm and starting to rain. Dark clouds were gathering and I was trying to get some shots before the downpour started. I shot maybe 15 takes of the lion standing on a rock and caught his face with good eye contact on several.Lighting
The light was pretty flat and getting dark because of the incoming storm. I was able to pull out some of the highlights on his face and paw in lightroom.Equipment
The shot was hand held at 300mm 1/640 sec @ f/6.3 using my Nikon D800. Using a tripod or monopod would have been a good idea since I was zoomed all the way to the end of the 300mm lens and shooting wide open, but I didn't have one with me.Inspiration
The zoo animals photos were inspired by an article by Serge Ramelli in Lightroom Magazine.Editing
I read an article by Serge Ramelli in Lightroom magazine some time ago about shooting zoo animals and applying a black & white effect. I found the article and followed the authors directions to create the effect. Then I modified it a little to bring back some of the color while keeping the over all muted colors. Cropping and enhancement on the face and paw was done in Lightroom. In my camera bag
Nikon D800, Nikkor 70 -300mm, Nikkor 105mm, Tamron 24 -70mm, Polorizer filters for each lens, Gitzo Tripod and head.Feedback
Find the article in Lightroom Magazine and follow the instructions. Shooting zoo animals is hit or miss. It isn't the savanna and there are people around. The day I shot the lion photo there weren't many animals out because of construction at the zoo, so it was difficult to get a variety of animals to work with. There is a shot of a giant lizard on my profile that I also did that day, a couple of birds and a nice shot of a flamingo with a water drop on his beak. There is no effect on the birds, but the lizard is B&W. It's a fun exercise and the post production is the best part.
