The red berries are another coprosma that hides beneath the foliage of the other plants. The leaves will be exposed to the light but it is difficult to tell which leaves they are unless one digs up the stems to find out which are the shrubs leaves. This is probably a strategy to help survive winter. The berries can be very striking.
