While traveling through Maui, one of the last stops my family made was just on the side of the road. It didn't look like there was anything there, as you were sandwiched between a wall of bamboo and a fence with colorful trees on the other side, but since there were quite a few cars parked, we figured we might as well stop by even though we were on a bit of a time crunch. We walked through this tiny little gap between bamboo that I guess counted as the path, and squeezed our way through the overgrowth, slowly descending into the bamboo forest. What surprised me and is something I still appreciate, is how quiet it was once we were off the road. You were just surrounded by tall, green stalks and yet everything was covered by the shadows of the bamboo, as they reached far above your head. It was a place that made you feel at peace, isolated from the chaos that consumes most of our world, and clean. I say clean because of how it felt to trail your fingers across the bamboo as you walked along the paths. They were so smooth.
These two planks of wood were something that I did not get to cross. There's a curiosity in me that hopes one day I will be able to go back, and cross this path, the one created in order to safely cross over the river that played music on the rocks below. Even when I took this photograph, I could not see the river because of the depth of the crevice, but its sound was all I could hear.
