Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken on the Ellerburn Trail in Dalby Forest, North Yorkshire, UK.Time
This was taken around 10am on a winters morning. I remember it being frosty when this picture was taken.Lighting
I’ve always wanted to capture an image with the sun and the rays shining through the trees. The light was perfect for this image with the low winters sun behind the trees.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D3400 using the Nikon 18-55mm lens. Aperture was set to f/11. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I didn’t set out to capture this image. It was an opportunist moment when I was walking this trail and everything fell into place nicely with the sun and mist.Editing
I normally take landscape shots using aperture priority mode in raw so I can make any adjustments afterwards in Lightroom. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the right balance of colours as I was looking at the sun so I increased the clarity and reduced the saturation to create the black and white image. This created a much better inage. In my camera bag
I always carry my camera bag with me which has my Nikon and four lenses. The 18-55mm lens is a good all rounder and perfect for landscapes. The 55-200mm Nikkor and 70-300mm Sigma lens is perfect for wildlife and sporting shots. The new lens to my camera bag is the 50mm f/1.8 which I haven’t tried much st the moment. I always carry the flash gun and some spare batteries. A useful item in my bag is a note pad and pen to make notes as I go along especially if I capture the perfect image and want to know the settings for other images.Feedback
Find a place that is local where you can use and experiment with. Images like this are often better taken in winter when the sun is low (below the tops of the trees) but the frost and mist added an extra little sparkle to the landscape. I was lucky with the mist but shots like this can easily be replicated by a morning winter stroll (doing it in the summer means getting up ridiculously early which isn’t good with the little one who joins me on most strolls). Don’t leave the house without your camera gear! This was an opportunist moment that I’m glad I had a chance to capture.
