Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at an abbey that was built in the 13th century. It's a favourite spot and I go there often, it makes me wonder how people lived, what they did, how they survived. The abbey is just south of Brussels and not very far from my home.

Time

I took this shot in the morning when the sun beautifully lights up the most imposing part of the buildings. This facade still looks authentic to me and has no traces of renovation or modernity.

Lighting

It's worth revisiting a place to see how the lighting changes during the day but also in the seasons. In Belgium we don't always have sunny days so one has to make the most of it in terms of photography. Light can also be crisp and fresh in autumn and spring which also makes for great photographic material.

Equipment

I used my canon 750D, hand-held for this shot.

Inspiration

I often go along to this beautiful sight and just take pictures, in winter in the snow, in summer, spring and autumn, and even at night. Everything was perfect in this shot, the sun on the building without shade, the cloud in the background and the blue sky.

Editing

At the time, I don't think I was doing much post-processing. If I take a shot in raw I sharpen the image and play around with the exposure. Usually I use the filter in Lightroom to darken the background and increase contrast.

In my camera bag

These days, I often take some kind of stabilizer along, preferably a small tripod. I have a wide angle lense and a telephoto and I love a grey filter to slow down the movement of water.

Feedback

If you can, just keep visiting a site that interests you and keep taking photos under different circumstances. These days it's so easy with digital photography, you can experiment endlessly and it costs you nothing except a new memory card from time to time.
