Location
The Selfridges Building near Birmingham's' Bull Ring shopping centre.Time
This was in November, so I suppose ca 16.30 pm, could be called late afternoon.Lighting
At this angle I was approximately at right angles to the light which is always good for revealing texture and form to give an image depth. Being later in the afternoon the light was lower so not shining directly down on the building but just a little higher than the line of the direction the cloud apparently pointing at the building was, which helped to connect the cloud to the building.Equipment
Pentax K3 II with 50-135 pentax f2.8 lens at 55mm (82mm FF equivalent) at ISO 100 f7.1 (sharpest aperture) with -1 EV to give a shutter speed of 1/1600 for a handheld shot.Inspiration
Fabulous unique architecture is always good to photograph and explore and I found this during a short weekend stay in Birmingham. I noticed this cloud formation tapering towards the building like a sort of pointer or finger and immediately saw the title and treatment needed in post processing i.e., mono!Editing
Yes I did any necessary clean up e.g. dust spots before tweaking exposure. contrast to give a little more form and life to the flat raw image before cropping and converting to mono in Lightroom. Then played with the colour and luminosity sliders to suit before adding clarity and final touch of sharpening using Lightrooms mask slider to remove sharpening effects in the sky. Not the way I would approach it today but sometimes it is not necessary to get too involved with processing and going beyond Lightroom. In my camera bag
For walking about a Pentax K3 or K3 II with a 16-50, 12-24 and 50-135 Pentax lenses.Feedback
Avoid midday unless the light is suitable for your intended purpose. Spend time walking around and investigating your subject. Don't be satisfied with your first batch of shots keep trying new angles and perspectives as well as different focal lengths and apertures. Above all have fun and enjoy!
