At this site, five successive places of worship have been built since the fourth century. Of the fourth Romanesque church built by Theoduin of Bavaria around 1066, still remains today a crypt accessible from the right side aisle of the collegiate church.

The first stone of the fifth church, the current collegiate church, was laid on March 15, 1311 by Prince Bishop Thibaut de Bar. The choir was dedicated to Notre-Dame in 1377 and all work completed in 1536. Burned in 1803, the collegiate was the subject of major restorations in the mid-nineteenth century and from 1889 to 2010.
