Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is taken in one of the most beautiful cities in Poland: Wroclaw (also know by the German name of Breslau). I was on a 1 week holiday there and had the chance to shoot some beautiful night pictures.

Time

This picture is taken on the evening of 7th February of 2018, at 7:57 PM overlooking Ostrów Tumski, which is the oldest part of the city of Wroc?aw in south-western Poland. It was formerly an island between branches of the Oder River. I was walking along the river bank, it was a very cold night, I did not have a tripod, but I used the very well placed concrete wall which was guarding the sidewalk on the edge.

Lighting

The lighting itself was not particularly special that evening, but the Oder River in that area was very still and the reflection of the historic buildings was fascinating.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 600D, 18-55 mm f/3,5-5,6, no flash, no tripod no other equipment.

Inspiration

I have a passion for night photography, I like light painting but also I like catching a good reflection. The capture seemed mysterious in a way I cannot describe, whether it was the cold outside, the water being so still, the history looking in a mirror I cannot tell for sure.

Editing

I shoot raw and usually I change few things like the decrease the highlights, decrease the shadows, increase contrast, clarity, but I aim to keep the saturation and vibrance very close to reality.

In my camera bag

Right now I carry a lenseball, a fixed hand tripod, and two lenses (one fixed for 24mm f/2,8 and 55-250mm f/4-5,6). Sometimes I like to also play around with the flash but it's not always there.

Feedback

Night photography takes patience, good batteries, fixed points (tripod or improvising can also work) and of course warm clothes if it's cold outside. Experiment with the manual mode aperture settings to capture beautiful lights and try different vantage points. It's worth the time :)
