This picture was taken on a cold winter day while walking on a beach at Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, USA. The swans are only around here in the winter and I was lucky enough to catch a mating dance this day.Time
This was taken in the middle of the day, sometime around noon.Lighting
The light was right overhead and really made the water shimmer like diamonds.Equipment
Canon camera, no other equipment.Inspiration
I've watched the swans when they're around here for years, but I've never seen them performing the mating dance quite like this. Once I saw what they were doing, I really hoped to catch a picture with their necks in a perfect heart shape. The background swans were an added bonus, but I love what they add to the picture.Editing
I typically do some cropping as well as straighten my pictures. I was lucky with the lighting, butIn my camera bag
I have a Canon and a Lumix, as well as my phone. When I travel, I like to take my Lumix along as it's compact and easy to carry. The Canon, however, has a better zoom and wifi, so I like to use it when I'm at home. I only use my phone when I'm out and about and see something I'd like to capture, but most of my photos here were taken with either one of the cameras.Feedback
Get to know your local wildlife, including their habits. The more you watch them and know them, the easier it is to Be patient, and wait for the right lighting and the right timing- not just for the subject, but also for the background. Try different settings to capture the colors, background, and subject to tell the story or bring forth the emotions you're seeking.
