Higashiyama District, Kyoto - This is one of the cities best preserved historic districts. Amongst the narrow lanes and wooden buildings, stands the Yasaka Pagoda (40m tall) that is said to have been built in 592.

I love this photo. What this photo doesn't show is the hours spent on foot searching for this particular view of the street and the pagoda. Worth it!
