Behind The Lens

Location

Arlington National Cemetery - a military funeral for my great aunt and uncle. He was a World War 2 vet who eventually retired from the USAF.

Time

It was a morning funeral.

Lighting

I was pretty well shooting directly into the morning light. We were under an open tarp.

Equipment

Canon EOS 20D.

Inspiration

I was introduced to the US Army Chaplain before the funeral as a nephew who would be photographing the funeral. He quickly said to me how happy he was that I was there. "Your family members will forget what I say today, but they'll never forget the photographs you will take," and then quickly explained the ceremony and the best place to stand and to not worry - the Honor Guard would work around me if I was where they wanted to be.

Editing

Just enough levels to bring the whites under control.

In my camera bag

I normally shoot now with a 5D Mkii and a consumer-grade Canon with lenses from a fisheye to an 80-200mm.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to shoot into the light - just shoot manual and bracket exposures for safety
