Location
This photograph was taken at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Portland, OR. It is by far one of my favorite places to shoot during the foggy month of October. Each year, I change up the angle of the shot to capitalize on the mood surrounding me.Time
I aim for the foggiest part of the morning, usually around 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. About an hour later, the sun starts to break through creating sun rays fighting their way through the fog.Lighting
It's one thing to take freaky looking pictures of old cemeteries in the fog, but another thing entirely when you can get a little sunlight coming through. Magic.Equipment
My go to equipment is a Nikon D7100, and my Sigma 18-200mm work horse. I never use a tripod in the cemetery. I walk around trying to find the best angles. And really, I don't want to set up a tripod on someone's grave.Inspiration
Walking around for a while, I was getting tired. I came upon this weeping angel and she was perfect. I grabbed a few shots of her and then started walking away from her just when the sun started to come through. I turned around and she had changed. The sun lit up on her and she turned into something more than a weeping angel.Editing
The only thing I did in post-processing was to apply a B&W tone to it.In my camera bag
Lens cloths due to the moisture of the fog, a 50mm prime lens, and my camera and work horse lens. I also get coffee. That's a must have. But, don't put that in your camera bag. LolFeedback
The older cemeteries have the most personality and history. You don't need to get up too early if it's foggy. If it's not foggy, get up early for the sunrise. The shadows behind the gravestones and weeping angels will create equally stunning captures.
