Modernity and culture
The Indian village always attracts me because there are many mysterious rituals and customs of the ancient culture that are still preserved, nourished and celebrated in their original form. Owing to the mad pursuit of modernism, we are slowly drifting away from our roots in general and culture in particular. In this era of cultural crisis the only solace comes from our villages where our ancient culture is still preserved and stands upright & strong. It not only reflects in the way our villages celebrate festivals but also in their day to day lives, unlike cities where humans have become robots in the concrete jungle.
For a Holi shoot, I had the opportunity to go to a village where I saw a woman making a meal on a clay stove and she had a veil on her head & chest. The veil which is considered as a symbol of rregression & oppression in cities, symbolizes honor & dignity amidst the village folk. The demands of the present age life forces us to spread our wings and migrate to bigger cities for better life opportunities, but as an Indians our roots are still intact in our cherised culture and villages.
