Behind The Lens

Location

McMurdo Station, Antarctica, during the 2007-2008 austral summer season. This was taken after Christmas, when the planes land on the white ice runway instead if the sea ice runway.

Time

This was taken around 0900 in the morning. It was an overcast day, which is common that time of year, as the weather starts deteriorating more often as winter approaches.

Lighting

It was a gray day with lots of clouds, so the sun was spotty, but the clouds gave enough contrast to separate the plane from the sky.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus E-520. No tripod, as I was working and didn't have room in the crash truck.

Inspiration

Some of my favorite things to photograph in Antarctica were the landscapes and the planes. I loved the shot of this huge plane perfectly face on

Editing

No post-processing. I didn't have the software available at the time.

In my camera bag

My favorite lens for everything is a standard kit middle range zoom, usually 50-300mm.

Feedback

If you're shooting something that doesn't contrast well with your background, be patient for the natural light to accent your outlines
