Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Grand Haven, Michigan at the lighthouse on Lake Michigan. It is sometimes called “little red” due to the fact it is smaller than the red lighthouse in Holland, Mi. Which is called “big red”.

Time

I remember that this day I was going to an Instagram meet at a park at 10 am and we were having so much fun wandering and taking photos that when one of us got a message that there was huge waves happening at Grand Havens lighthouse that we all said “Let’s go!!!” When we got there it was around noon and it was amazingly windy but the sun was out and there wasn’t any clouds in the sky!

Lighting

Because the sun was out and high I didn’t need any special lighting. Besides the wind it was a gorgeous day!

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D3300 and the lens I used was a sigma 18-300mm. Handheld with no flash.

Inspiration

I’ve lived near Lake Michigan almost all my life and any chance I get to go to the lighthouses during a storm I’ll take!! This day was amazing in the fact it was so sunny and beautiful out but the wind was super strong out by the lake.

Editing

I used the app Snapseed on this photo to get a little more color and to make the waves pop a little more because the sun kind of muted the color.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D3300 with the sigma 18-300mm lens, lens hood, polar lens, mini tripod and mini lensball plus some fiber cloths to wipe the lens.

Feedback

When trying to catch a good wave you have to use a shutter burst so it takes multiple photos at one time. Plus be patient, very, very patient. Sometimes it takes awhile to get the perfect wave coming up over the lighthouse. So worth it in the end though!
