This click was taken whilst on safari in Kenya my 3rd day in the Masai Mara, this was my first trip out there and WOW a wild life photographers dream come true.Time
We left at 7am getting some good clicks in the golden hour of other animals, on our way back to our lodge around 10.30am our guide spotted three cheetahs, we were not the only ones following them but we managed to get a good spot with them looking our way. We were told that they were usually a group of five that had split up only a few days before, you could see this as the three were looking out for the other two, this meant we got some great clicks. ( on our last evening out the next day they had re grouped )Lighting
The Light was now getting very strong and casting some very awkward shadowing, but as we had a great guide she managed to move the land cruiser into position, it also helped that there were only three of us in a very roomy vehicle that the top lifted up and side windows opened wide, ( one tip I would give is make sure you get a good guide who understands photography / lighting/ positioning.)Equipment
Before leaving I was on the internet to try to get some advice as what gear to take ( what a mine field of information and personal views ) in the end I took my canon 5 d mark 3, canon 100 to 400 mk 1 zoom lens, 100mm macro lens, three memory cards, 3 spare batteries, charger, cleaning kit, all of my photo's were hand held. At no point did I wish I had taken any more equipment, I visited 4 safari parks and stayed at three different lakes taking over 7 thousand photo's in 14 days.Inspiration
This is a trip I just cannot wait to repeat, the wild life is unbelievable, the people are so friendly, helpful and conscientious of protecting the wildlife, I could not put my camera down and would certainly recommend anyone interested in this area of photography to go.Editing
I am still working through my memory cards trying to decide which photos that may need some work and the ones the only need light post processing, the lighting for me could be difficult at times because in the UK I am not so use to be lucky enough for such bright sunlight, shadowing does spoil some clicks but as I mentioned a good guide helps, the cheetah click didn't need any work.In my camera bag
I normally pack two canon bodies 5d mk3 and mark 2. may this year just traded up to canon 5d mk4,i usually do macro work but since my trip to Kenya i have now ventured into wildlife so have purchased a Tamron 150 to 600 G2 with convertor, monopod / tripod.Feedback
In my time in Kenya this year I took limited equipment, when I revisited next year I will be taking my canon 5d mk 4 and a 100 to 400 canon zoom, or my new Tamron 150 to 600 g2( just getting used to it, not sure about it yet ) personally I was worried about the security of my gear and took it with me most of the time. My only advise would be to make sure you have a good guide that understands photography and your not overcrowded in transport, also it is very dusty out there so be wary of lens changes and take cleaning kit with you.
