Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the living room floor in my Colorado home.

Time

This was taken at 5:59pm on November 24th, 2017, 1 day after Thanksgiving. I remember this very vividly because just the day before I was thanking my lucky stars for giving me such a wonderful daughter and I was feeling extra thankful about my life. The next night we spent the evening lounging on the living room floor playing with a small light-up globe.

Lighting

My daughter and I were both mesmerized by the light and I knew I wanted to use it to tell a story. The globe looks like she's holding the universe in her hands. I had little time to prepare because kids are quick so I just turned off the tv and surrounding lights.

Equipment

For this image I used the Canon 7D Mark ii and the Sigma 18-35mm lens.

Inspiration

A combination of the globe and my daughter's curiosity inspired me. Norah is so amazed by objects grown-ups often take for granted. She reminds me everyday that there's beauty in the little things and to not take anything for granted. She's holding the universe in her hands and looking down at it in amazement.

Editing

I used Lightroom during post-processing. I just cropped the photo down, warmed up the image a bit, and darkened the background to reduce distraction. Very little editing was used in this image.

In my camera bag

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens hardly leaves my Canon 7D. I love the wide angle. I also typically carry the Canon 85mm f/1.8 because I'm obsessed with that lens. I carry a speedlite as well because I usually shoot in dim locations. However, I like working with natural light.

Feedback

When photographing documentary style images of kids, be patient and take lots of photos. Lifestyle photographs are my favorite because a child's imagination really shows through when they can just be themselves without distraction. Watch their mannerisms and little quirks. Follow them around with a quick shutter speed and don't be afraid to play with new angles. But most importantly, get on their level. Paint with them, play with them. make messes with them. A truly happy child will make better photographs.
