Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Union Bay Natural Area in NE Seattle, Washington

Time

This was taken in early afternoon looking north.

Lighting

All natural light in mid afternoon on a cloudless day.

Equipment

This was shot with a Sony A77II using a Sony 55-300mm lens, hand held

Inspiration

This is one of those shots that I simply stumbled on. This heron was in an area of tall reeds and as I walked into the area, I did not see him right away. In fact this bird was so intent on its meal that it was not bothered that I was 15ft away snapping pictures.

Editing

Typical Lightroom processing to color balance, highlights, shadows, vibrance, and saturation.

In my camera bag

Normally when shooting wildlife I carry a Sony 55-300mm because it has a fast focus in addition to a Tamron 150-600 mm G2. I have mixed results using a tripod for wildlife but recently purchased a gimbal to hold the Tamron since it is heavy and very long.

Feedback

Best way to capture shots like this is to simply go to areas where you know these birds hang out and hope for the best. Most herons are somewhat skittish and will therefore not let you get very close. Bring along your best long lens and go to the area in question in different times of the day.
