The monastery stands on the edge of the Kasagh River canyon, and its territory is adjacent to the village of Ohanavan. The deep gorge is carved by the Kasagh River. Hovhannavank' is a major monument from the 7th c. and later, the best documented of the major Armenian monasteries due to a manuscript of history compiled in 1686 by the Archdeacon Zakaria. The main church is dedicated to St. Karapet. The monastery has rich stone decoration, and many inscriptions.
