Behind The Lens

Location

Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, AZ. I was in one of my first photography classes at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh - Online Division and the project required us to look

Time

This was late afternoon towards evening and I was walking around the Riparian Preserve and this was my first time there. I was looking at birds and landscape shots and then I came around the corner and started to cross the bridge and I saw a couple of Dragonflies flying around and through patience was able to capture a couple shots of both blue and gold Dragonflies.

Lighting

This was taken with natural light which allowed the reflection to highlight the different sections of the wings and body.

Equipment

I use a Cannon Rebel T5 with the EF 75-300mm Zoom Lenses

Inspiration

While I was walking around looking for bird and landscape shots I saw the dragonflies flying around and landing and taking off. I tried to get a couple shots but hey were too fast and too far away. Then I started to cross the bridge and realized that if I stopped on the bridge and waited I was close enogh to wher a couple Dragonflies were landing that I could capture them with my gear. I ened up capturing 3 good inages but it took me about an hour of just staying still on the bridge to do it. It was worth the effort though.

Editing

Yes, I used Light Room to zoom in and to adjust the color so that the Dragonfly stood out more and you could see the details better.

In my camera bag

I carry the Cannon Rebel T5 with the 18-200MM lens as I do not like changing lens all the time. I found that I missed shots having to change lens to get the right shot. I always have a Tripod with me just in case I need it and a reflector so that I can ensure that my images have the right light.

Feedback

It is not about the gear but about how you take the shots. The Rebel T5 is a good beginners camera but can also serve you well in competition and other areas. It is about how you as the photographer use the gear and then getting the correct post production done in Light Room and Photoshop. Don't be timid because you do not have the latest and greatest gear, get out and do the best with the tools you have and you well surprise yourself and your clients.
