Free running horses still roam in the old Gold mining town of Kaapchehoop (SA) for the past 100 odd years after the gold miners moved on to the next big discovery, leaving the horses behind to use the ruins as they please at an elevation of 1650 m and providing shelter from the elements.

A second story tells about the heritage of these horses dating back the the British vs Dutch War in South Africa 1899 to 1902 around the same gold rush peak period. The Dutch using the eastern mountain range for protection and hiding their Gold reserves.

What once was part of a gold vault safe has become an open stable to these semi-wild horses.
