Behind The Lens

Location

The photo of the covered bridge was taken during a daily stroll down Emert's Cove Road. I live adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Emert's Cove is named after Johan Frederick Emert, a Revolutionary War soldier who served under General George Washington. The covered bridge was erected in honor of him, and the pointers of Emert's Cove, in 2000. I enjoy taking photos of the historical structures, which abound in my area. The bridge is widely photographed - tour groups stop by regularly - and I have taken many photos of the bridge. The angle in this photo showcases the linear made made elements juxtaposed with the natural beauty of the trees and water.

Time

With the tree cover, shadows and cool winter light, I decided to take a picture of the bridge in mid-day, to catch the full light without any part of the bridge in shadows.

Lighting

The cool tones of mid-afternoon softened the contrast, whilev allowing for details to be clear.

Equipment

A perfect picture with minimal equipment! Just a phone camera, a steady hand and a great subject!

Inspiration

Most pictures of the bridge are taken with the tunnel section foremost. I wanted to highlight the natural surroundings and the bridge.

Editing

No post-processing!

In my camera bag

Canon Rebel is my main camera and for outdoor general use, I prefer an EF 50mm f/1.8 STM standard lens. This shot, however, was captured via my cell phone, a Google Pixel!

Feedback

Lighting is key! In my area, surrounded by mountains, mid-day is often the best time for structural shots. Otherwise, shadows play havoc with clarity.
